Lucinda Anderson - Lab Manager I'm a senior at Brown double majoring in biology and international and public affairs. I chose these two concentrations because I'm fascinated by the intersection of marine ecology and ocean policy and governance in developing nations. I am currently working on my senior thesis on coral resilience during ENSO cycles in the Galapagos. My research interests include climate stressors effects on corals, keystone species and their ecosystem services, trophic cascades, and population genetics as it relates to climate change. I'm from San Francisco, CA and love scuba diving, surfing, and playing soccer. I am on the Brown Women's soccer team and am a two-time Ivy League Champion! |
Kieren Leif Dykstra - Lab Member I'm a junior concentrating in Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal biology here at Brown. I've been very interested in marine conservation (with a special interest in sharks) since I was a child, and I followed that passion into high school by attending The Sound School, a marine biology and aquaculture school. As a part of Witman Lab I am working primarily on acoustic analyses of anthropogenic disturbance at several research sites in the Galápagos. I am also involved in predator-prey dynamics analysis and biological diversity studies in the lab. I am interested in continuing my work in marine conservation biology, and would like to draw from my background in marine microbiology – especially to do with bacteriophage – in future studies. |
Anna Dubey - Lab Member I'm a member of Brown's class of 2025 studying ecology and evolutionary biology. I'm interested in the responses of coastal marine communities to climate change and other anthropogenic disturbances. Outside the Witman Lab, I'm a mentor in environmental science at a Providence high school, a biology teaching assistant, and an author at Encyclopedia Britannica. |
Ella Buchanan - Lab Member I’m from Yarmouth, Maine and I’m a junior at Brown. I study biology and visual arts. I’m super happy to have joined the Witman Lab this semester, and I’m really excited to work on some interesting projects that are based out of my home state! I’m particularly interested in animal immunology right now, and I’m hoping that I can put my areas of interest to good use in the future, such as identifying the diseases that can cause coral bleaching. This is a picture of me after 9 days of kayaking and camping. Glad to be here! |
Sofia Nuri - Lab Member
I am a Junior at Brown University majoring in environmental science. I am a 2021 member of the New Science Catalyst Summer program and a current member of the New Scientist collective. My previous research experience includes two years at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History learning biotechnology such as DNA sequencing and operating a scanning electron microscope. I have also interned at the Carnegie Institute for Science where I developed biotech skills such as protein purification and transforming bacteria. At the Witman lab, I haved assisted in megafauna identification and measuring fish biodiversity under the effects of megafauna presence for previous senior projects. |
William Bachelder - Lab Member I am a member of the Brown class of 2025 studying ecology and evolutionary biology. I spent my summer researching the European green crab’s molting behavior in the Gulf of Maine, and developing fishery techniques that take advantage of those behaviors to increase earnings while removing a harmful invasive species from the environment. Outside of the exciting world of marine science, I like drawing, writing music, and spending time outdoors. |
Carlotta Gessler - Lab Member
Hi, I am Carlotta and I joined the Witman Lab in Fall 2022. I am very passionate about marine conservation and am interested in increasing the lab's outreach by connecting art and sciences . I have been planning the Witman lab exhibition in Spring 2023 and am now excited to work on the acoustic and photo quadrat projects. |
Anna Amha - Lab Member
I am currently pursuing a BSc. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, with the intention of graduating in 2026. I am interested in marine biology and have always loved the ocean and all its wonders. I joined the lab in 2022 and assisted on a research project studying the effects of diver and megafauna presence on fish interactions under the context of the Pandemic lockdown. This summer I was a research intern at Allied Whale, a marine mammal lab at College of the Atlantic that focuses on the identification and research of whales. There I collected and archived data on cetacean and seabird populations off the coast of Maine and Canada. I also had the opportunity to work on Allied Whale's marine mammal stranding unit and assist with various research projects on Mount Desert Rock Research Station. |
